Go for the HS101 ultra-portable DLP LED Projector

As I haven’t got any feedback from my previous post regarding this product, So, I took the risk and decided to go for the HS101 ultra-portable DLP LED Projector from LG Electronics. And it’s finally here. I imagine few people have had the chance to play with it. So, I spent some time to write this brief review.

The LED Projector is part of a new crop of projectors that differ from previous generations by using leds instead of lamps. The biggest disadvantage of these led projectors is that they currently can’t match the level of brightness provided by lamp based ones. While the latter’s brightness are usually measured in terms of thousands of lumens, led projectors’ brightness still range between 25 and 100 lumens. I know the gap sounds ridiculous, but bear in mind that lumen isn’t a linear unit; double the lumens and you may hardly notice any difference in brightness. Anyway, pictures to follow may give a better hint on this matter.

So, why did I choose a LED Projector?

The reasons: 1) Near-zero IR emission, thus causing less IR pollution on the camera (no hotspots!). 2) Incredibly small size and weight, thus allowing for easier integration especially in boxed/table setups. This is made even easier with reasons 3 and 4 below. 3) Average shorter throw distances. 4) Cooler operation (turns off in 2 seconds!). 5) Relative low cost.
